Taia

Ancient Egyptian Character Taia

Who is Taia?

Taia, the Egyptian, is the wife of a minor Judge living in the Middle Kingdom period. She refers to her homeland as the ‘Black Land’, what we now call Ancient Egypt.

Taia’s Visit

Taia is travelling between her home and that of her parents, and is pleased to be stopping at your school for a rest. She has a range of packages and parcels containing various everyday items and gifts for family and friends. Travel worn and hungry, she may break her fast and unwrap parcels to check and discuss their content. Don’t be surprised if she starts to teach the audience to dance!

There is no set script for the presentation, it depends on what artefacts or subjects the audience become interested in. However, the material can be steered in the direction(s) desired by class teacher.

As part of the day, Taia can bring a ‘tomb’ exhibit to give the children a flavour of Egyptian burial practices.

Workshops

The Ancient Egyptian workshops are currently:

Food. Comparing foods that we eat today with those that were available to the Egyptians. If you wish, your children can sample the produce or make a simple dish.
Collar making. The children use paper, card, pasta and glue to make themselves an Egyptian-style collar.
Beaded Jewellery. Making necklaces and bracelets using the types of beads available at that time.
The Tomb! A crawl-in experience of a middle-ranking civil-servant’s child’s burial.
However, other workshops are in development and we will be pleased to discuss your needs.

Travelling Shop

This a prebooked “step back in time shopping experience” that runs as a workshop within the visit. The children are given goods which they can either keep or use to barter choose a different purchase from a range of items typically available in those times. Cost is £1.50 a child.
